Our story

At the bottom of Carrer Montcada, where the street widens into a long little square just before Passeig del Born, there’s a space that used to be a laundry.

When it fell empty, over thirty years ago, Toni Sallent and his wife opened it to the potters and glassmakers, so they had somewhere to show and sell their work. That was the start of 1748 Artesania i Coses, a shop for Catalan folk crafts.

Over the years, finding new makers has become something of an adventure: many of the master craftspeople have retired, with no one to carry on their work. Still, the stone and brick walls are as full as ever of porrons, plates, cooking pots and clay and glass of every shape and colour.

“Ara com fa trenta anys, els murs de pedra i maó de la botiga encara se’ns presenten atapeïts de porrons, plats, olles i altres estris de fang i vidre de tot tipus de formes i colors.”
